The Government of Yukon makes it easier for nurses and nurse practitioners to work in the Yukon

The Government of Yukon has modernized the Registered Nurses Profession Regulation to make it easier for more nurses to work in the territory. Effective November 3, 2024, registered nurses and nurse practitioners can apply directly in the Yukon for licences without needing to be registered in another Canadian jurisdiction first. This change also allows new graduates and internationally trained nurses – including those already here working in other fields – to apply directly to work as nurses in the territory.

Government of Yukon provides update on heap leach failure at Victoria Gold’s Eagle Gold Mine

The Government of Yukon continues to provide updates to Yukoners regarding progress on the remediation work and environmental monitoring at the Eagle Gold Mine.

We are now in a situation where remediation work on site is progressing in a timely fashion, an independent review is underway, Victoria Gold employees and former employees are receiving supports and services and active monitoring of the health of fish, animals, people and the environment is ongoing.

Statement from Premier Pillai on the passing of the Honourable Murray Sinclair

Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:

“It is with great sadness that I mark the passing of the Honourable Murray Sinclair, one of Canada’s most decorated and influential people to work in Indigenous justice and advocacy.

“His Honour had a long career in public service. He is a former judge, senator and chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. He served over 25 years as a judge after having first been appointed as Manitoba’s first Indigenous judge and Canada’s second at the time.

Government of Yukon provides response to coroner's inquest jury recommendations

The Government of Yukon, in collaboration with Connective, has formally responded to the recommendations from the jury regarding the April 2024 coroner’s inquest into the tragic deaths of four Indigenous women at 405 Alexander.

Statement from Minister McPhee on Radon Action Month

Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee has issued the following statement:

“November is Radon Action Month in Canada. This month, the Government of Yukon is encouraging homeowners to test their homes for radon and take action to protect themselves if their home tests above the Health Canada guideline.

“Radon is a colourless, odourless gas that comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in rocks and soil. It’s radioactive and is found in every region in Canada. While radon is harmless outdoors, it can build up to dangerous levels indoors.

Government of Yukon announces reopening of Jim Smith Building warming centre for winter 2024-25

As part of the Downtown Whitehorse Safety Response Action Plan, the Government of Yukon will reopen the public community space at the Jim Smith Building, starting November 4, 2024.

As was the case with last year’s pilot project, the Yukon government’s addition of a warming centre in downtown Whitehorse aims to improve accessibility to safe spaces and social services for all, especially vulnerable populations.
