Premier Sandy Silver has issued the following statement:
“Canada Day is a time to reflect on the country we call home and share with Canadians from coast to coast to coast.
“We can take great pride in the promise of Canada as a peaceful, democratic society that values equality, multiculturalism and diversity. Our rich legacy of contributions in the areas of medicine, technology, peacekeeping, literature, arts and culture, sports and beyond is also a great source of pride for Canadians.
“Despite considerable achievements, we must recognize that we have much work to do if we are to make good on the promise and potential of our society.
“Today the Canadian flag is flying at half mast to honour those who have suffered harm and lost their lives as a result of residential schools.
“While the impacts of the residential school system went unacknowledged for generations, we must accept that it is a defining and dark feature of Canada’s history.
“The effects of residential schools still permeate Canada today. Survivors and their families continue to grieve and live with intergenerational pain and trauma.
“It is essential that all Canadians learn about and understand the true history of our country in its entirety. I strongly encourage everyone to read the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action to better understand and contribute to advancing reconciliation.
“We all share a collective responsibility to acknowledge our past mistakes while building on our great accomplishments to make our country a better place to live for all Canadians.”
