Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:
“On behalf of the Government of Yukon, I would like to congratulate Sean Smith (Uyenets’echįa) on his recent election as Chief for the Kwanlin Dün First Nation.
“I would also like to extend my congratulations to the new Councillors Charlene Charlie, Charles Chief, Linda Moen, Jesse Ryder, Jolene Smarch and Ray Sydney.
“I look forward to working with the new Chief and Council to advance our government-to-government relationship. Chief Smith brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from his time on Kwanlin Dün Council and his commitment to revitalizing Yukon First Nations languages. I am confident that the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and community will benefit under Chief Smith’s leadership.
“I wish Chief Smith and the newly elected Council all the best in their role as elected representatives and look forward to continuing our strong working relationship with the Kwanlin Dün First Nation.
“I would also like to thank Chief Bill for her service and dedication during nine years as leader for the Kwanlin Dün First Nation.
“The Yukon has benefited from Doris Bill’s strong leadership. During her time as Chief, Kwanlin Dün First Nation made significant contributions, developing additional housing, upgrading infrastructure, and implementing a Market Housing Program for citizens. Doris Bill’s commitment to elders, youth and the community has been clearly demonstrated by leading the development of extensive programming in education, health, and economic development.
“I would also like to thank Doris Bill for her valuable work as co-chair on the Yukon Advisory Committee on MMIWG2S+ which contributed to the goal of ending violence against Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit-plus people. Doris Bill has always been a strong partner whose leadership has strengthened the entire Yukon community.
“I am honoured to have worked with her and wish her all the very best on her future endeavours.”
