The Government of Yukon, in partnership with the Yukon Lottery Commission, today announced 20 Yukon athletes and one official will receive $33,000 for the second intake of this year’s High Performance Athlete Assistance Program.
In June 2020, $69,500 was awarded to 26 athletes and three officials for the program’s first intake for 2020. There were two intakes this year due to the impacts of COVID-19.
The High Performance Athlete Assistance Program offers support to individual Yukon athletes and officials who have demonstrated they are at a high or elite performance level.
Though COVID-19 has temporarily interrupted major sport competitions, we look forward to the day when Yukoners can again compete at these events. This funding will support our territory’s amazing athletes during this time, allowing them to continue their training and skill development and ensuring they are ready for competition when these events return.

The Yukon High Performance Athlete Assistance Program provides funding for athletes who have demonstrated performance that is beyond the territorial level, with the potential for improvement at the provincial, national or international levels.
-
Typically, there is only one intake for this program every year, which is announced in June. However, a second intake was introduced in 2020 to give athletes and officials an opportunity to apply for funding once they had a better understanding of the impacts of COVID-19 on their training and competitions.

Given the evolving situation of COVID-19, the Government of Yukon is approaching this year’s sport and recreation funding with flexibility and will continue to do so.
